Joh 19:1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged [flogged] him.
Joh 19:2 And the soldiers platted [twisted together] a crown of thorns, and put it on his [Jesus'] head, and they put on him a purple robe,
Joh 19:3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote [struck] him [Jesus] with their hands.
Joh 19:4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him [Jesus] forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him [Jesus].
Joh 19:5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!
Joh 19:6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him [Jesus], they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him [Jesus].
Joh 19:7 The Jews answered him [Pilate], We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself [he claimed to be] the Son of God.
Joh 19:8 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the [even] more afraid;
Joh 19:9 And went [back] again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou [where do you come from]? But Jesus gave him no answer.
Joh 19:10 Then saith Pilate unto him [Jesus], Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?
Joh 19:11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.
Joh 19:12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him [Jesus]: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.
Joh 19:13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
Joh 19:14 And it was the preparation [day] of the passover [passover day followed by the 7-day feast of unleavened bread], and about the sixth hour [of daylight, about noon]: and he [Pilate] saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
Joh 19:15 But they [the Jews] cried out, Away with him [Jesus], away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
Joh 19:16 Then delivered he [Pilate] him [Jesus] therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
Joh 19:17 And he [Jesus] bearing [carrying] his [own] cross [,] went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:
Joh 19:18 Where they crucified him [Jesus], and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst [middle].
Joh 19:19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Joh 19:20 This title then [was] read [by] many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh [near] to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.
Joh 19:21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
Joh 19:22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.
~ The Soldiers share Jesus' Clothing
Joh 19:23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made [divided them into] four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
Joh 19:24 They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend [tear] it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: [this happened] that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted [divided] my raiment [garments] among them, and for my vesture [coat] they did cast lots. [ quoting Psa 22:18 ] These things therefore the soldiers did.
~ Jesus asks a Disciple to take care of His Mother
Joh 19:25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
Joh 19:26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son [the disciple]!
Joh 19:27 Then saith he [Jesus] to the disciple, Behold thy mother [Jesus' mother]! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
Joh 19:28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, [so] that the scripture might be fulfilled, [Jesus] saith, I thirst.
Joh 19:29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge [sponge] with vinegar, and put it upon [a] hyssop [stalk], and put it to his [Jesus] mouth.
Joh 19:30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
Joh 19:31 The Jews therefore, because it was the [day of] preparation [the day before a "sabbath" day], that [so] the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day [the next day]
[ John clearly explains here that today (passover, and crucifixion day) was also the preparation day for a "high sabbath day" that was occurring the next day (i.e. not the preparation day for a regular Saturday sabbath day). Therefore, today, crucifixion day, is not Friday (with the next day being a regular Saturday sabbath). Instead, today, crucifixion day, is Thursday (with the next day (Friday) being a high sabbath day). Hence, today, crucifixion day, is Good Thursday, (not "Good Friday.") ] [for full details see Crucifixion & Resurrection QBA ]
[ In the Bible's Old Testament we learn that this high day sabbath day is the day after passover, Nisan 15, on which the 7-day feast of unleavened bread begins (Lev 23:6). On the 1st day of the feast of unleavened bread, ye shall do no servile work (so it is a kind of sabbath day) (Lev 23:7, Num 28:18, Exo 12:16). ]
[ Today, our 24-hour days begin at midnight, whereas Hebrew days in the Bible (designated by -Heb) began at the previous sundown (about 6 hours before midnight). Therefore, Friday-Heb night (a 12-hour night), and Friday-Heb day (a 24-hour day), both begin at sundown on Thursday (using today's time).]
[ It is now Thursday-Heb afternoon (passover day, crucifixion day, and preparation day for the high day sabbath tomorrow (Friday-Heb day)). This Thursday-Heb day does not end until sundown Thursday. Thursday-Heb day (evening, night, morning, daytime) is the preparation day, the 24-hour day before the Friday-Heb high day sabbath (which begins at sundown Thursday). ]
[similar to Mat 27:57-66, Mar 15:42-47, Luk 23:50-56 ] [for full details see Crucifixion & Resurrection QBA ]
Joh 19:32 Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.
Joh 19:33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his [Jesus'] legs:
Joh 19:34 But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his [Jesus'] side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
Joh 19:35 And he [the man] that saw it bare record [has given testimony], and his record [testimony] is true: and he knoweth [knows] that [what] he saith [is] true, [and testifies so] that ye might [also] believe.
Joh 19:36 For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him [Jesus] shall not be broken. [ see Exo 12:46, Num 9:12, Psa 34:20 ]
Joh 19:37 And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him [Jesus] whom they pierced. [ see Zec 12:10 ]
Joh 19:38 And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he [Joseph] might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave [permission]. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
Joh 19:39 And there came also Nicodemus, which [who] at the first came to Jesus by night, and [who now] brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight [in Greek: a 100 litrai, about 75 pounds, about 34 kilograms].
Joh 19:40 Then took they [ Then Joseph and Nicodemus took] the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury [in accordance with Jewish burial customs].
Joh 19:41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre [tomb], wherein was never [a] man yet laid.
Joh 19:42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre [tomb] was nigh at hand [nearby].
[ The 3 days (all or part of 3 24-hour days) and 3 nights (all or part of 3 12-hour nights) that Jesus is "in the heart of the earth [sepulchre, tomb]" (see Mat 12:39-40) doesn't start counting until after sundown on Thursday (crucifixion day). Sometime during the evening (see Mat 27:57-58 and Mar 15:42-45) (after sundown) on Thursday (using today's time), the counting does begin with Friday-Heb night (part of a 12-hour night, that began at sundown Thursday, night#1), and Friday-Heb day (part of a 24-hour day, that began at sundown Thursday, day#1). ]
[ If we continue counting, we get Saturday-Heb
night (a 12-hour night, that began at sundown Friday, night#2),
and Saturday-Heb day (a 24-hour day, that began at sundown Friday, day#2),
followed by Sunday-Heb night (all or part of a 12-hour night, that began
at sundown Saturday, night#3, and night#3 counting ended either
with Jesus' resurrection sometime before sunrise, or at sunrise Sunday,
if Jesus' resurrection occurred on or after sunrise), and Sunday-Heb day
(part of a 24-hour day, that began at sundown Saturday, day#3, and
day#3 counting ended with Jesus' resurrection before or after sunrise,
Resurrection Sunday). ] [for full details see Crucifixion
